Bayer HealthCare receives NICE recommendation for Eylea

Bayer HealthCare has been granted a National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommendation for its eye drug Eylea.

Final guidance from the UK regulator has endorsed the product as a therapy for wet age-related macular degeneration, an eye condition that affects the macula and causes problems with central vision.

Eylea has been approved for use in accordance with recommendations for ranibizumab in NICE technology appraisal guidance, providing it is supplied to the NHS under terms agreed with the Department of Health as part of a patient access scheme.

This is NICE's final guidance on this technology and now replaces local recommendations across the country.

Professor Carole Longson, Health Technology Evaluation Centre director at NICE, said: "Today's guidance … provides healthcare professionals with clear advice on where and when this treatment can add value as another treatment option for those affected by this distressing condition."

Earlier this year, the company commenced a new study of Eylea to assess its benefits as a therapy for diabetic macular oedema.
