Bayer HealthCare’s Xarelto demonstrates VTE treatment benefits

Bayer HealthCare has announced the publication of new phase III trial data that demonstrates the safety and efficacy of its multipurpose anticoagulant therapy Xarelto.

Data from the Einstein clinical trial programme has been published in the Thrombosis Journal, revealing that single-drug therapy with Xarelto is an effective treatment option for venous thromboembolism (VTE).

The drug was shown to be effective in both the treatment and subsequent prevention of recurrent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, with an overall comparable safety to the traditional dual-drug therapy.

Moreover, it significantly reduced the rate of major bleeding events and provided an improved benefit-risk profile compared to the traditional dual-drug approach of injectable low molecular weight heparin followed by a vitamin K antagonist.

Dr Kemal Malik, member of the Bayer HealthCare executive committee and head of global development, said these analyses "provide further reassurance regarding the clinical use of Xarelto across a broad range of clinical settings".

Last month, the company announced that it will be launching Garfield VTE, a registry of more than 10,000 venous thromboembolism patients, in order to study the efficacy of various approaches to treatment.
