Bayer has revealed it has acquired Metrika, a diabetes care company.
Metrika produces the A1CNow+ device, designed to test HbA1C blood glucose levels to a level that is 99 per cent accurate within lab results. A1CNow+ is described as a portable system that demonstrates a patient’s HbA1C levels directly and quickly, without the need for lab tests that can take longer.
Using a monitor and disposable cartridges coupled with in-built micro-optical technology, the device is employed by doctors in a “simple” three-step procedure.
The results are available after five minutes, with the “hands-on” procedure taking one minute to complete.
Sandra Peterson, president of Bayer Diabetes Care, a division of Bayer HealthCare, stated: “In keeping with our history of innovation in diabetes care, we are very excited to now offer people with diabetes and their healthcare providers the first and only device for use both at home as well as in the professional setting for monitoring of HbA1C, perhaps the most important indicator of blood sugar control.”
Metrika is based in Sunnyvale, California. The company was founded in 1994 and it claims that the diabetes in vitro diagnostic market is the fastest growing in the disease monitoring segment.
Bayer Diabetes Care also produces a series of blood glucose monitoring systems as part of its Ascensia range.
