Bayer’s regorafenib shows benefits in lung cancer treatment
Bayer has announced new clinical trial data demonstrating the safety and efficacy of regorafenib in the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Results from the phase III RESORCE trial showed that treatment with regorafenib, whenc combined with the best supportive care, served to significantly improve overall survival rates among patients with unresectable HCC who progressed during treatment with sorafenib.
The median overall survival rate was 10.6 months for patients treated with regorafenib, compared to only 7.8 months in a control group treated with placebo. The safety and tolerability of the therapy was also shown to be positive.
Data from the RESORCE trial will be used to support Bayer's efforts to secure regulatory approval for regorafenib as a treatment for HCC this year.
Dr Jordi Bruix of the University of Barcelona said: "There is only one approved systemic treatment option for patients with this disease, and there are currently no proven or approved second-line treatment options for patients with advanced HCC."
This comes after the firm commenced a new clinical trial assessing the potential of the prostate cancer therapy BAY-1841788 last month.
