Biogen Idec commences enrolment for MS drug trial

25th May 2010

Biogen Idec has begun the enrolment process for an upcoming phase III trial of daclizumab, its treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS).

The company, in association with collaborative partner Abbott, has enrolled the first of around 1,500 patients who are expected to take part in the global Decide clinical study.

It will aim to investigate and compare the efficacy of a once-monthly subcutaneous formulation of daclizumab to Biogen Idec’s interferon beta-1a-based treatment Avonex, which is currently one of the most commonly-used MS drugs.

Biogen Idec hopes that results from this study will augment the positive findings of the previous Choice trial, during which a combination of daclizumab and interferon beta-1a was shown to be more effective than using Avonex on its own.

Dr Alfred Sandrock, senior vice-president of neurology research and development at Biogen Idec, added: “Initiating this trial demonstrates our commitment to developing new treatment options for patients who suffer from this terrible disease.”

According to Biogen Idec’s most recent financial report, sales of Avonex increased by seven per cent year-on-year during the first quarter of 2010.
