Boehringer Ingelheim reports positive results from Pradaxa analyses

Boehringer Ingelheim has reported results from a pooled post-hoc analysis of five phase III trials that provide further evidence of the benefits of the anticoagulant Pradaxa.

According to data from the landmark RE-LY trial, treatment with Pradaxa was associated with lower mortality and a shorter length of stay in intensive care compared to warfarin among patients experiencing a major bleeding event.

This is an important finding that strengthens the favourable benefit-risk profile of the therapy as bleeding is a known possible treatment complication of all anticoagulant therapies

Professor Klaus Dugi, corporate senior vice-president for medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim, said the results "suggest that in the absence of a specific antidote patients treated with Pradaxa may nonetheless expect better outcomes to those treated with warfarin should a major bleeding occur".

Earlier this week, the company announced the commencement of a phase III clinical trial of the investigational haematology/oncology compound volasertib as a potential therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia.
