Boehringer Ingelheim sells natural healthcare arm

29th August 2006

Boehringer Ingelheim has sold its natural healthcare arm and subsidiary, Pharmaton, to a New York-based company called IdeaSphere.

Pharmaton researches and develops multivitamin and mineral formulations, as well as plant-based pharmaceutical research.

Boehringer Ingelheim said the move was brought on by the company’s desire to strengthen its consumer healthcare portfolio, which includes Dulcolax, Buscopan and Antistax.

On the part of IdeaSphere, it said the acquisition of the Swiss-based Pharmaton would help broaden its own product line, while providing access to European markets.

Dr Alessandro Banchi, chairman of Boehringer Ingelheim’s board of managing directors, commented: “IdeaSphere has been carefully selected as a result of a diligent process and will be the ideal partner to further develop Pharmaton, while Boehringer Ingelheim will continue to strengthen its consumer healthcare business by further building up the flagship and international core brands.

“Both Pharmaton and IdeaSphere have a common strategic vision and core competencies in the development, production and marketing of natural health and multivitamin products,” he added.

Pharmaton produces Pharmaton capsules in the UK, which are designed to make people feel more energetic “within a matter of weeks”.

Additionally, the company markets Activit G, an orange-flavoured drink containing Ginseng G115.
