Boston Scientific launches new guide extension catheter

Boston Scientific has announced the US and European launch of the Guidezilla guide extension catheter, for use in complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures.

The device has received US Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance and CE Mark approval and can be used to deliver interventional devices such as balloons and stents more efficiently in situations where extra backup support is needed.

Its stainless steel hypotube shaft provides pushability and kink resistance, while the hydrophilic coating on the outer diameter minimises friction to make it easier for interventional cardiologists to navigate difficult-to-reach areas. 

Kevin Ballinger, president for interventional cardiology at Boston Scientific, said: "Boston Scientific is committed to delivering innovative technologies such as the Guidezilla device that enable physicians to improve outcomes for patients undergoing complex coronary interventions."

Last month, it was announced that Boston Scientific will be acquiring the electrophysiology division of fellow medical technology firm Bard as part of its strategic growth objectives.
