Boston Scientific reports positive data from Epic stent trial

Boston Scientific has reported positive data from Orion, a new clinical study of its self-expanding nitinol stent system Epic.

The device has demonstrated robust safety and effectiveness outcomes over a 12-month period among patients with obstructed iliac arteries, while meeting its primary goal of reducing the number of major adverse events caused by the condition.

Duplex ultrasound procedures showed a primary patency (level of un-obstruction) of 94.4 percent, thus indicating that the vast majority of treated lesions remained open through the 12-month follow-up period.

This positive data further affirms the effectiveness of the Epic stent, which has enjoyed early launch success and an improved market share since its US debut.

Jeff Mirviss, president of peripheral interventions at Boston Scientific, said: " The Epic Stent has been very well-received by physicians … They appreciate the radial force of the stent, which helps allow the artery to stay open, and the flexibility in its design, which helps in deliverability."

Last week, the company announced its first patient enrolment for a new study assessing the safety and efficacy of its innovative Lotus Valve System among severe aortic valve disease patients.
