Boston Scientific’s Vitalio receives first patient implant

Boston Scientific has announced that its new Vitalio pacemaker has been implanted in a patient for the first time in Europe.

Dr Salah Said – a cardiologist at ZGT Hengelo in the Netherlands – was the doctor responsible for implanting the device, which includes a comprehensive suite of features designed to optimise cardiac pacing.

One of its most important advances is the innovative AP Scan system, which is designed to help physicians identify patients with severe sleep apnoea and monitor the impact of treatments for those affected by the condition.

Its RightRate and Respiratory Rate Trend features ensure that patients receive pacing when they need it, at the rate they need it, while it is also available in an Extended Longevity model with a larger battery capacity.

Michael Onuscheck, senior vice-president and president of Boston Scientific's Europe, Middle East and Africa division, said: "Boston Scientific is focused on innovation and we are pleased to offer a broader portfolio for comorbidity management in the pacemaker population."

This comes after the company recently announced that it has agreed to purchase the electrophysiology department of fellow medical technology firm Bard, thus further expanding its product portfolio.
