BVA calls for British ban on wild circus animals

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has called for a ban on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in the UK.

It says all of the devolved administrations in the country ought to introduce a ban on this practice, with president of the organisation Peter Jones stating the body is "optimistic" its recommendations will be followed through.

He said: "The welfare of these animals is emblematic of the way we treat all animals and we can see great merit in UK-wide legislation to ban this unethical practice without further delay."

Mr Jones added non-domesticated, wild animals cannot have their health and wellbeing needs met within the environment of a travelling circus.

Bodies supporting the proposals include the Born Free Foundation, the Captive Animals' Protection Society and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The BVA, which was formed in 1952 from the National Veterinary Medical Association, currently has more than 13,500 members and an annual turnover approaching five million pounds.
