BVA reiterates industry support for badger cull

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has reiterated its support for the government's planned badger cull, following the recent decision to delay the move.

While expressing frustration that the proposed pilot culls will take place next year – rather than this autumn as originally planned – the organisation has welcomed the government's ongoing commitment to carrying them out.

The BVA states that scientific evidence shows that a badger cull would make a significant difference in limiting the spread of bovine tuberculosis, noting that no country has dealt with this disease without first tackling it among wildlife.

However, the National Farmers Union has concluded that it cannot be confident that it will be possible to remove enough badgers for the policy to be effective, based on recent sett surveys in the pilot areas.

BVA president Peter Jones said: "It is vital that the delivery of a badger cull is both effective and humane. If the pilots cannot be delivered effectively this year then it is responsible to postpone until next year."

Earlier this month, the association welcomed news that the advertising of antimicrobials directly to animal keepers will be banned from 2013, as part of wider efforts to combat antibiotic resistance.
