BVA welcomes new Welsh dog breeding regulations

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has welcomed the publication of new draft regulations that will help to combat irresponsible dog breeding in Wales.

Produced by the Welsh government based on feedback from a recent consultation, the new proposals will help to tackle the issue of puppy farming and have been formulated following advice from industry experts.

Changes include alterations to minimum staff-to-dog ratios, yearly licenses for premises and a restriction on selling.

BVA president Carl Padgett described the new regulations as "bold", welcoming the fact that this has been made an issue of high priority by Welsh authorities.

The BVA head also reacted positively to comments from the environment minister suggesting that new laws will be considered that require all dogs in Wales to be microchipped.

Mr Padgett noted: "As well as promoting the responsible ownership message, another clear benefit of permanent identification is the increased traceability it provides between puppies and their breeders."
