Celgene reports positive data from multiple myeloma drug trial

Celgene has announced positive data from a new phase III clinical trial that demonstrates the efficacy of a new pomalidomide-based oncology regimen.

Results from the study showed that pomalidomide plus low-dose dexamethasone delivered significant progression-free and overall survival improvement to patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.

The therapy's performance was compared to high-dose dexamethasone among subjects who had failed treatment with both bortezomib and lenalidomide, administered either alone or in combination.

It means that the new regimen was able to meet its primary efficacy endpoint, an outcome that will support the company efforts to gain regulatory approval for the therapy in the US and Europe.

Submissions have already been made to both the European Medicines Agency and US Food and Drug Administration, with decisions forthcoming in 2013.

This comes after the company reported data from the phase III clinical study Palace-1 last month which demonstrates the potential offered by its new psoriatic arthritis therapy apremilast.
