Chiron has announced it is recalling its measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, Morupar, from Italian and developing world markets.
Research in Italy found that the vaccine may have been associated with a larger number of what the company refers to as “adverse events” following its use than those associated with other MMR vaccines.
The range of adverse events detected during routine pharmacovigilance surveillance included fever, allergic reactions and swelling of the glands.
Last year, the company supplied approximately five million treatments of the Morupar vaccines to a number of developing countries, mostly via Unicef and the Pan American Health Organisation.
In addition, Chiron supplied just under half a million vaccines to Italy, where the problems were detected. Sales of the vaccine in 2005 totalled approximately $10 million.
Chiron has said it will work with the World Health Organisation to determine whether the remaining treatments of the Morupar vaccine are suitable for use.
