Cook Medical launches LithAssist for PCNL applications

Cook Medical has announced the launch of a new device to simplify percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedures by streamlining stone management and treatment.

LithAssist combines suction control and provides access for a laser fibre, thus making it easier to break up and remove large kidney and bladder stones.

Its ergonomic handle allows the physician to position the laser fibre and suction with one hand, synchronising the procedure to give the user more control, while also freeing an assistant to help with other aspects of the procedure.

Around 466,000 PCNL procedures are performed globally, with most hospitals relying on an assistant to control suction by kinking a tube, similar to how one would stop water flow from a garden hose.

Jean-Marc Creissel, global leader of Cook Medical's urology division, said: "Streamlined procedures are beneficial for the physician, the hospital and ultimately the patient. This is just one more example of our commitment to solving problems for physicians."

This comes after the firm resumed shipping of its Zilver PTX drug-eluting peripheral stent last month following a voluntary recall pertaining to a product safety issue that has now been fixed.
