Covidien completes enrolment of Parietex ProGrip trial
Covidien has completed enrolment for a clinical study of Parietex ProGrip, its self-fixating mesh for use in the treatment of primary inguinal hernias.
The medical device manufacturer has signed up 600 patients to take part in the study, which will compare the use of its mesh product to the current gold standard suture-based Lichtenstein repair method.
Interim data drawn from 390 patients has already shown that Parietex ProGrip can help users to experience a significant reduction in early pain compared to the control treatment, while it was also associated with shorter surgery durations.
Dr Michael Tarnoff, chief medical officer of Covidien, noted that this represents one of the largest industry-sponsored abdominal wall repair clinical studies conducted to date.
"This is a great example of our commitment to generating robust clinical evidence through a well-executed strategy focused on addressing unmet clinical needs and improving patient outcomes," he added.
Last month, Covidien published financial data for the second quarter of its current fiscal year, during which it saw a ten percent year-on-year net sales increase.
