Covidien launches Barrx Channel RFA Endoscopic Catheter

Covidien has announced the launch of its new Barrx Channel RFA Endoscopic Catheter, an innovative new radiofrequency ablation (RFA) device.

It has been optimised for the treatment of Barrett's oesophagus – a precancerous condition of the oesophageal lining that can lead to life-threatening cancer – and certain other gastrointestinal bleeding disorders.

As with other Barrx offerings, the device carefully controls the amount of radiofrequency energy delivered to remove diseased tissue, thereby ensuring that the growth of healthy tissue is not impaired.

Its patient-centric design allows for fewer endoscope introductions and removals compared to other Barrx catheters, while other benefits include a transparent ablation electrode for enhanced visualisation and a rotatable shaft design for additional control and manoeuverability.

Vafa Jamali, vice-president and general manager for gastrointestinal solutions at Covidien, said: "The newest addition to the Barrx portfolio is designed to simplify the procedure by delivering our proven radiofrequency technology through the working channel of the endoscope."

Earlier this month, the company announced its financial results for the third quarter of its 2013 business year, during which it experienced a three percent year-on-year sales increase.
