Covidien launches new cuffless Shiley tracheostomy tubes

Covidien has announced the launch of new cuffless neonatal and pediatric tracheostomy tubes under the Shiley brand, with the aim of enhancing patient care and safety.

The newly-introduced products feature an expanded range of tube sizes, down to a 2.5mm inner diameter, in order to accommodate a wider range of patients, while their soft, clear flanges facilitate easier examination of the underlying skin for infection.

Tubes are manufactured using medical-grade PVC and utilise a citric-based non-phthalate plasticiser in order to meet the latest patient safety standards.

Covidien has received regulatory approval to launch the new products in the US, Canada and Europe.

Robert White, president for respiratory and monitoring solutions at Covidien, said: "This new product portfolio represents an important step forward in the care of young patients dependent on tracheostomy tubes."

Earlier this month, Covidien agreed a deal to distribute Vida Diagnostics' Apollo pulmonary imaging software as part of a new alliance.
