Covidien’s Kendall SCD system shows benefits in study

Covidien's Kendall SCD (sequential compression device) system has had its effectiveness underlined by a new independent study carried out at the University of Edinburgh.

Data from the Clots 3 trial showed that the device – which incorporates Vascular Refill Detection Technology – can help to reduce the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) events among immobile stroke patients.

A 29.9 per cent decrease in the development of proximal DVT was seen among stroke patients who received intermittent pneumatic compression using the device, while a mortality risk reduction was also observed during the first six months after hospital admission.

Dr Mark Turco, chief medical officer for vascular therapies at Covidien, said: "The large, statistically significant mortality reduction in stroke patients treated with sequential compression versus routine care … should revolutionise post-stroke treatment, leading to improved patient outcomes."

Earlier this month, the company announced positive data from a new trial of its Pipeline embolisation device, which can offer complete and durable aneurysm embolisation without the need for an alternative treatment.
