Daiichi Sankyo’s edoxaban shows efficacy in clinical trial
Daiichi Sankyo has published data from a new clinical study of edoxaban, demonstrating its advantages compared to a leading alternative.
During the phase III Stars J-V trial, which involved a total of 610 patients, Daiichi Sankyo's drug was evaluated as a means of preventing venous thromboembolic (VTE) events in patients following total hip replacement.
Edoxaban was shown to be superior in reducing rates of symptomatic and asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis compared to the control drug, while also meeting its primary safety targets.
This data will help to support the company's efforts to gain approval for the treatment in this specification from healthcare regulators in its native Japan.
Dr Takeshi Fuji, head of orthopaedic surgery at Osaka Koseinenkin Hospital, welcomed the drug as a "new treatment for preventing VTE after hip replacement procedures and as a more convenient oral therapeutic option for patients".
This comes after Daiichi Sankyo completed enrolment for a new edoxaban trial earlier this month, which will evaluate the compound's effectiveness among atrial fibrillation sufferers.
