From the beginning of December, Parkfield dental surgery will no longer be offering NHS services in their clinic. The announcement by the Head of the Surgery, Dr Mike Biccard, also assured the community that all pre-booked NHS appointments will be carried out.

“Over the last few months we have become increasingly busy, and it has become apparent that we now need to make some changes to the way we practice given the demands on our time.” Dr Biccard stressed in a letter to the community.

He went on to add, “We want to be able to spend more time with you and offer you a wider choice of treatments in a more relaxed environment and reduce the appointment waiting times.”

Due to a short staffing within the surgery and budget cuts to the NHS, Parkfield clinic and many others in the surrounding area have struggled to keep up with the volume of patients and subsequently have stopped onboarding new patients.

“We understand that finding a dentist can be challenging, and dental surgeries may not always have the capacity to accept new NHS patients.”, commented Deputy head of NHS Somersets primary care, Sukeina Kassam.

Kassam continued, “Our efforts include implementing initiatives to increase the availability of dental appointments and launching preventive care programs to support patients in maintaining their oral health.”
