Diabetes patients ‘often experience mental health issues’
A new report has highlighted the need for people with diabetes to be provided with better mental health support.
Diabetes UK has carried out a survey of 8,500 people with diabetes of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds from across the UK, finding that three in five experience emotional or mental health problems as a result of their condition.
Moreover, 33 percent said diabetes got in the way of them or a family member doing things they wanted to do, while 30 percent said they definitely felt in control of their diabetes.
The report also showed that 19 percent of respondents had used support or counselling from a trained professional to help them, while 32 percent had relied on self-help materials including books, videos and resources found online.
In response to the findings, the charity has called on the government to commit to sustaining diabetes transformation funding at current levels of 44 million pounds until at least 2021.
Chris Askew, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: "Investing now will not only allow us to reap substantial financial and social benefits in the future, but more importantly it will help people to live well with diabetes today."
