Eli Lilly’s Donanemab Reduces Effects of Alzheimer’s by 36%
Eli Lilly is in the development process for a potentially revolutionary Alzheimer’s treatment which can reduce mental deterioration by 36%. This shows promise to be the start of the end for the life-altering brain condition.
Donanemab is administered intravenously once per month for 18 months and has been shown to decrease the decline in daily function by almost 40%. The details of the trial outcomes will be revealed by Eli Lilly in the near future.
At the start of the month, the US FDA authorised the use of a similar medication called lecanemab, which reduced the effects of Alzheimer’s by 27%.
Donanemab treatment removes brain plaque clusters, which are directly related to the brain condition. This is received by patients once per month for a maximum of 18 months, or to the point where the amyloids have disappeared.
Specialists are currently weighing up the potential dangers associated with the treatment, such as haemorrhaging and brain enlargement, compared to the advantages.
If tests show success, it may be approved for use in the UK in as short as a year.
Following approval, the NHS will have to decide who is eligible to receive it, leaving some concerned that donanemab, which has an estimated price of £16,000 yearly, may only be accessible to those who have the funds to go private.
