Elsevier announces Article of the Future project

Elsevier has announced an ongoing collaboration with the scientific community that aims to redefine how scientific articles are presented on the internet.

The Article of the Future scheme aims to take advantage of web-based technology to provide readers with individualised entry points and routes through content, while also making the most of new advances in visualisation techniques.

In a statement, the company announced that the key feature of the prototype Articles of the Future, which will be made available this week, is hierarchical presentation of figures and text to allow for more highly targeted viewing.

The second is bulleted article highlights and a graphical abstract to allow readers to gain an understanding of the paper’s main points.

Commenting, IJsbrand Jan Aalbersberg, vice-president of content innovation for Elsevier, said: "The Article of the Future project forms part of Elsevier’s commitment to collaborating with our scientific community on content innovation."

Earlier this month, the company announced that it has formed a publishing partnership with the Edinburgh and Ireland branches of the Royal College of Surgeons.
