Ferring Pharmaceuticals earns EU approval for nocturia therapy Nocdurna
Ferring Pharmaceuticals has announced that its new nocturia treatment Nocdurna has been approved by the European Commission.
The therapy works by reducing the amount of urine the kidneys produce and is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of nocturia due to idiopathic nocturnal polyuria in adults, with specific dosages available for men and women.
Two phase III studies, CS40 and CS41, showed that the treatment significantly reduced the average number of night-time urinations compared to placebo, while nearly doubling the probability of patients reducing the number of night-time urinations by more than 33 percent.
Nocturia, or the need to awaken at night to urinate, is a condition with various contributing factors. The night-time overproduction of urine – known as nocturnal polyuria – is responsible for nocturia in up to 88 percent of cases.
Dr Pascal Danglas, chief medical officer at Ferring Pharmaceuticals, said: "The long and thorough development process has enabled us to provide gender-specific dosages, enabling a personalised medicine approach for men and women."
Up to 60 percent of elderly men and women display symptoms of nocturia, but it can affect people of all ages.
