Forest says linaclotide data is positive

Forest has presented positive results from clinical trials of linaclotide.

The novel, first-in-class agent has been investigated by the company and Ironwood Pharmaceuticals for its safety and efficacy when treating patients affected by irritable bowel syndrome with constipation.

Across a range of doses over a 12-week period, the studies suggested the therapy could significantly aid abdominal symptoms and bowel habits.

The results were discussed yesterday (May 31st) at the Digestive Disease Week conference.

Over the coming days, both firms are also due to present findings from investigations of linaclotide in treating sufferers of chronic constipation.

The event is being held in Chicago and will conclude on June 4th.

Last month, Forest announced its fibromyalgia medication Savella (milnacipran HCl) would now be available at selected pharmacies.

The company developed the drug with Cypress Bioscience and they had submitted a marketing application of it to the Food and Drug Administration in January this year.

Since the initial request, the firms have also put forward a minor post-approval cosmetic formulation change, which the regulatory body permitted.
