GDC calls for feedback on CPD changes

The General Dental Council has encouraged UK dental professionals to provide feedback on its planned changes to continuing professional development (CPD) regulations governing the sector.

Claire Herbert, head of revalidation at the GDC, told Dentistry.co.uk that she believes its forthcoming CPD reform will help improve standards of practice and provide reassurance for patients and the public.

Under the new plans, all GDC registrants must identify their CPD needs using a personal development plan, which they would work through in a timely manner before reflecting on how this has benefited them.

These new proposals have been drawn up in response to a major review of current CPD requirements carried out in July 2011.

"We are committed to developing approaches that are workable so it is crucial that we hear from registrants, CPD providers, employers, commissioners and others now about what they think about our ideas," said Ms Herbert.

The organisation is also currently soliciting views on new improvements to the GDC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics, with the consultation period to close at the end of the month.
