GE Healthcare reveals “world’s first compact 4D ultrasound”
GE Healthcare says it has received FDA clearance for its Voluson i, the world’s “first and only” compact ultrasound system designed for women’s health.
The system is designed to allow clinicians to make real-time diagnoses, no matter where the patient is located and it fits into a laptop-sized frame, according to the company.
Four-dimensional ultrasound is the latest ultrasound development. Since the inception of two-dimensional ultrasound, which revealed flat pictures of babies in the womb, threee-dimensional ultrasound was developed to record a digital image which displays the baby’s exterior anatomy in full, three-dimensional detail from many different angles. Four dimensional ultrasound allows this, but in real-time so the baby can be seen moving or blinking as well.
Omar Ishrak, president and chief executive officer of GE Healthcare’s clinical systems business, said: “GE’s Voluson i is a technology breakthrough for women’s healthcare that can expand the reach of the proven clinical benefits of 4D and volume imaging.”
“The Voluson i will support a completely new level of efficiency for obstetric and gynaecological physicians, enabling them to deliver patient care anywhere it’s needed,” he added.
GE Healthcare’s global headquarters are based in Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire. It employs 43,000 people throughout the world and it has sites in Slough, Worcester, Glasgow, Bedford, Amersham and Hatfield.
