Gelesis’ Plenity Weight Loss Therapy Shows 85% Success Rate
The swallowable pills used to deliver Gelesis’ Plenity therapy are available exclusively by prescription. When the pills break down, gel particles remain in the stomach, imitating the cellular structure of raw vegetables. This acts as added volume, making people feel full more quickly and for a greater duration.
The procedure is now authorised for use in patients with a BMI of 25 to 40 and is designed to be used in conjunction with a recommended healthy diet and fitness programme. A BMI under 25 is considered to be ideal, and those with a BMI over 40 are considered to be severely obese.
The Plenity trial looked at individuals with a range of BMI’s, some of which also had Type 2 diabetes.
After 24 weeks, over 85% of study participants had lost weight, with the average loss for this group coming in at about 9%.
Most of participants in the study declared they had not altered their nutrition or activity levels at all during this period, despite the fact that Plenity is designed to be taken in conjunction with these recommended lifestyle changes. Furthermore, those who started with the worst dietary habits were most likely to benefit from the treatment.
Research Writer, Elaine Chiquette, has speculated that this new option may be able to catch up with current successful weight loss and control products, including Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy.
She said that: “not one treatment fits all, even GLP-1 agonists, and a need remains for multiple tools and in particular weight management therapies that are accessible, affordable and clinically proven.”
