General Medical Council training survey identifies areas for improvement

The General Medical Council (GMC) has claimed the training of junior doctors is currently unsatisfactory in some areas.

In its annual junior doctors training survey, the organisation found that 25 percent of newly qualified doctors said they do not feel ready to take the next step in their career.

Furthermore, 22 percent said they felt inadequately prepared for certain challenges.

The survey also identified a need for improved supervision and feedback, as 28 percent of trainees said they rarely or never received feedback and advice from senior colleagues.

However, the GMC also found that 79 percent of doctors rated their training as excellent this year.

"Overall, trainees continue to be very satisfied with their training, but the concerns they have raised need to be urgently addressed by all those with responsibility for supporting doctors," said Niall Dickson, chief executive of the GMC.

The council recently launched a consultation on Good Medical Practice, its core guidance document for doctors in the UK.
