Gilead Sciences reports positive trial data for HIV drug Genvoya
Gilead Sciences has announced new phase III clinical trial data demonstrating the efficacy of Genvoya, its investigational once-daily single-tablet regimen for HIV.
The company has reported 96-week results from two phase III studies evaluating Genvoya – which combines – elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) in a single tablet – for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in treatment-naive adults.
Genvoya was found to be statistically non-inferior to Gilead's existing product Stribild, which combines elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), with the new therapy also delivering improved renal and bone laboratory parameters.
TAF is a novel investigational nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor that offers high antiviral efficacy at a dose less than one-tenth that of TDF, sold by Gilead under the brand name Viread.
Dr Norbert Bischofberger, Gilead's executive vice-president for research and development and chief scientific officer, said: "The two-year data presented this week further support the long-term utility of Genvoya, given the sustained viral suppression and continued improvements in renal and bone safety markers."
