GlaxoSmithKline and Biological E to create vaccine joint venture

GlaxoSmithKline has underlined its commitment to improving health in developing nations after announcing a new vaccine-focused joint venture with Biological E.

The firm will form a 50/50 joint venture with its Indian partner for early-stage research and development of a six-in-one combination paediatric vaccine against polio and other infectious diseases.

Combining GlaxoSmithKline's injectable polio vaccine and Biological E's pentavalent vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and haemophilus influenzae type B, the new treatment would be the first of its kind if approved.

It is intended for use among children in India and other poorer nations and would be easier to store and use, while requiring patients to receive fewer injections.

Christophe Weber, president of GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines, said: "We are delighted to be working with Biological E, an established company in the global vaccine market. This agreement is fully aligned to GlaxoSmithKline's vision of providing high quality vaccines to those in need."

Earlier this month, the company announced its support for the UK government's Public Health Responsibility Deal, which will see it reducing the calorie and sugar content of leading consumer brands such as Ribena and Lucozade.
