GlaxoSmithKline backs chair in sustainable chemistry at University of Nottingham

GlaxoSmithKline has announced the creation of a new chair in sustainable chemistry at the planned GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.

The pharmaceutical company will contribute funding for the creation of the position alongside the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Once established, the chair's role will be to develop and share best practice in green chemistry, while catalysing new collaborations with other institutions and industry partners.

The overall aim of this scheme is to strengthen the UK's leading position in the life sciences sector, while also further contributing to environmental stewardship efforts.

Sir Andrew Witty, chief executive officer of GlaxoSmithKline, said: "This is a great example of the public and private sector working together to find new ways to protect the environment and conserve natural resources for the future."

The new GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry will be established on the university's Jubilee Campus, using a 12 million pound grant from the company.
