GlaxoSmithKline reports positive trial data for combination COPD therapy
GlaxoSmithKline has announced new clinical trial data that demonstrates the benefits of a new treatment option for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Positive top-line results have been announced from the pivotal phase III FULFIL study of an investigational once-daily closed triple combination therapy, consisting of fluticasone furoate, umeclidinium and vilanterol.
The study met its two co-primary endpoints, demonstrating statistically significant improvements compared with an established twice-daily therapy in terms of lung function and health-related quality of life improvements at the end of the 24-week study period.
Triple combination therapy is often a necessity for patients with COPD, but typically it is dispensed via multiple inhalers, making GlaxoSmithKline's new product a more convenient alternative.
Dave Allen, head of respiratory research and development at GlaxoSmithKline, said: "By combining three medicines in a single inhaler, we can offer a convenient, once-daily dosing option to patients while improving their symptoms."
This comes after the company reported positive clinical trial data for Relvar Ellipta and Anoro Ellipta, two other COPD therapies, last month.
