Gore implants first patient in vascular graft trial

WL Gore and Associates has announced that the first patient has been implanted with new vascular graft technology being trialled as part of a new clinical study.

The patient is the first of 138 who will be fitted with the Gore Acuseal vascular graft, with the study designed to gauge the safety and efficacy of the device among those undergoing haemodialysis.

According to Gore, the procedure was a success, with the graft having been cannulated or punctured for haemodialysis access within 24 hours of being fitted.

Should the product perform to standard in the trial, it will represent the only prosthetic vascular graft to offer predictable self-sealing qualities alongside superior handling and a heparin-bonded surface.

Dr David Cull, an investigator for the clinical study, said: "The concept behind this new product is the blending of self sealing with an optimal handling vascular graft compatible with a patient's native blood vessels."

Earlier this month, Gore revealed that its new DrySeal Sheath for patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms has been successfully introduced in Australia.
