Hitachi Energy Partners with Orsted for Offshore Wind Advancement
In a significant development for the UK renewable energy sector, Hitachi Energy has been selected by Orsted to provide advanced equipment for the Hornsea 4 offshore wind farm. The project aims to integrate 2400MW of electricity into the UK grid using Hitachi Energy’s cutting-edge Enhanced STATCOM technology, marking its debut in the European offshore wind industry.
This collaboration signifies an innovative leap in grid stabilisation, addressing grid frequency variations and system voltage challenges. Hitachi Energy’s Enhanced STATCOM technology incorporates the use of SVC Light Enhanced equipment, integrating efficient reactive power compensation with supercapacitors. These sophisticated electronics can rapidly absorb and inject active power, enhancing grid stability and offering the capability for grid stability services.
The initiative underlines the growing importance of technological advancements in renewable energy, particularly offshore wind, a crucial component of the UK’s sustainable energy future. Ørsted’s strategic partnership with Hitachi Energy builds on their existing collaboration and reflects confidence in deploying this advanced technology for the first time in Europe.
With a 2.4GW Contract for Difference (CfD) secured and final investment decisions imminent, the Hornsea 4 project is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing the UK’s renewable energy landscape. Planned to commence commercial operations by 2030, this initiative not only strengthens Ørsted’s position in the offshore wind sector but also paves the way for future technological innovations in grid integration, solidifying the UK’s commitment to a carbon-neutral energy system.
