Hologic study shows benefits of breast tomosynthesis

Hologic has reported data from a new population-based study that sheds new light on the numerous benefits provided by its 3D mammography technology, also known as breast tomosynthesis.

The trial was the first large-scale observational study in a US clinical practice comparing breast cancer screening using Hologic's technology with conventional 2D mammography alone.

It revealed that breast tomosynthesis was associated with a significant reduction in recall rates and a sizeable increase in cancer detection – particularly invasive cancer – across all breast tissue densities.

This results in cancers being detected early, when they are easier to treat, while also minimising the number of false positives.

Peter Soltani, senior vice-president and general manager for breast health at Hologic, said: "The use of this groundbreaking technology when performing a screening exam allows radiologists to see distortions of the breast tissue in greater detail than with 2D mammography alone."

This comes after a study in the European Radiology journal last month further underlined the positive benefits of breast tomosynthesis technology.
