Horiba ABX chemical analyser assists UK university research

16th September 2008

Horiba ABX’s bench-top ABX Pentra 400 clinical chemistry analyser has been installed at Loughborough University’s School of Sport and Exercise Sciences to aid the department’s research into exercise, health and nutrition.

The unit is already being put to use in a study of the effects of working out on risk markers for cardiovascular disease, providing analytical results for a variety of human metabolites and biomarkers, the company said.

The university chose the ABX Pentra 400 as it needed an analysing unit capable of processing a high volume of study samples in a short time span, it added.

Furthermore, the unit had to be accurate, reliable and easy to operate for a high number of users, mostly PhD students.

Dr David Stensel, director of postgraduate studies at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, said: "What was essential though was a reliable, intuitive analyser with low coefficients of variation, both within and between batches. The ABX Pentra 400 has definitely met these requirements."

Loughborough University’s School of Sport and Exercise Sciences is a Queen’s Anniversary Prize-winning department with five-star rated research. It is also the base for the National Gymnastics Performance and Research Centre.
