Infant Smart Sock Re-released as BabySat by Owlet

28th June 2023

Owlet launched a product called Smart Sock a couple of years ago, this notified adults when their infants blood oxygen or heart rate level moved out of what was considered to be ‘healthy’. This was taken off the market in 2021 following the receipt of a letter from the FDA stating the device should not be used in an unmonitored setting.

Although Owlet cautioned consumers about Smart Sock not being a medical device, the FDA noted that notifications may still cause people, including physicians, to assume that the baby was having health complications.

Owlet has now revealed that it has received the organization’s approval for a new iteration of the product, called BabySat.

BabySat wraps around the infants’ foot and monitors oxygen saturation levels and heart rate through pulse oximetry, a non-invasive method of diagnostic testing. Because it is intended for newborns who may require more frequent observation, a prescription is mandatory before use.

CEO Kurt Workman said, “BabySat pushes forward the modernization of hospital-grade technology for at-home use and underscores our commitment to transforming baby care solutions.”

Further details on the Smart Sock, which formerly sold for $300, are anticipated for release later in 2023.
