LEO Pharma launches blood clot prevention drug

LEO Pharma has announced the launch of ATryn (antithrombin alfa), a compound used to prevent blood clots in patients unable to produce sufficient quantities or quality of antithrombin – a vital protein for the management of the coagulation process in the bloodstream.

Patients with hereditary antithrombin deficiency can risk death if left untreated.

LEO Pharma concluded a development and marketing agreement for ATryn in Europe, the Middle East and Canada in 2005, with LEO Pharma now responsible for marketing and sales of the drug in this indication and its further development for other patients.

The company initiated a phase II clinical study of the compound in August 2007 in patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), with the company investigating the safety, efficacy and optimal dose of the drug.

Ernst Lunding, chief executive officer of LEO Pharma, said: “ATryn is a new, exciting drug with interesting perspectives if it can be used for the treatment of other indications.

“This could be for the treatment of DIC at patients with severe sepsis.”

He added that the drug complements the firm’s existing anticoagulation product portfolio that currently includes Innohep, Heparin LEO and Protaminsulfat LEO Pharma.

In April 2007, LEO Pharma announced its full-year revenue for the 2006 fiscal year, with sales rising to a record DKK 5,176 million (472.6 million pounds).
