L’Oreal research shows potential of silanes in cosmetic applications

1st October 2015

L'Oreal has presented its research into the potentially significant cosmetic applications of silanes at a recent industry conference.

As the only firm to have patented silane technology application in cosmetics, a research team from the company was invited to present its pioneering work during the recent International Sol-Gel Conference in Kyoto.

Sol-gel technology is a chemical process capable of transforming some materials from a liquid to a solid gel-like state. Silanes are a family of molecules inspired by this process.

Based off this knowledge, L'Oreal was able to create Aminosilane, a silicon compound with mineral and organic components that can strengthen hair structure. Its effect is long-lasting, and even more efficient when hair is damaged.

Aminosilane is one of two key ingredients of the APTYL 100 molecular complex, used in the company's Pro Fiber hair repair treatment used by hair salons.

Henri Samain, head of L'Oreal's research and innovation department, said: "L'Oreal Research has always been dedicated to developing an effective and long-lasting solution to treat damaged hair. We knew that part of the answer was finding a material capable of penetrating the hair; the big question was how."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801802091-ADNFCR
