Lundbeck initiates trials for Parkinson’s agent

Lundbeck has initiated Phase I clinical trials for its pharmaceutical candidate Lu AA47070 in the treatment of neurological diseases including Parkinson’s disease.

The trials will investigate the agent’s safety, tolerability and the pharmacokinetic profile of the compound in humans.

Lu AA47070 is an adenosine receptor antagonist that has demonstrated efficacy in a number of animal models.

The pharmaceutical company has stated its expectation to see the agent demonstrate potential in certain neurological indications and act as an alternative to dopamine agonists in the treatment of Parkinson’s.

Peter Hongaard Anderson, head of research at Lundbeck, illustrated that the Lu AA47070 was a “promising” compound that could make a significant difference for patients with Parkinson’s disease.

“Lu AA47070 is discovered at Lundbeck and is our first compound within the neurology area from our internal research,” he confirmed.

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative condition which affects four million people worldwide.

Last month, Lundbeck initiated Phase I trials investigating the safety, tolerability and the pharmacokinetic profile of a compound in patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke.
