Medtronic commends recipient of intraoperative surgery award

Medtronic – which manufactures surgical devices – has recognised the achievement of Henning Dralle as he received an award for his paper entitled Intraoperative Monitoring of the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve in Thyroid Surgery.

Mr Dralle, professor at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, received the best paper of 2008 accolade for his approach and insight into the issue from the World Journal of Surgery.

Carla Pagotto, product manager for intraoperative nerve monitoring with Medtronic ENT, part of the surgical technologies business at the firm, congratulated the professor for his research into identifying and minimising the risk of patients developing recurring laryngeal nerve palsy.

“Tools like Medtronic’s own intraoperative nerve integrity monitors are designed to combine both hardware electronics and software to help surgeons perform critical procedures while preserving nerve function and improving patient safety,” she added.
