Medtronic launches new FlexCath Advance steerable sheath
Medtronic has announced the introduction of a new second-generation sheath that will enhance the functionality of its Arctic Front Advance cryoballoon system.
The FlexCath Advance steerable sheath has made its debut in the US after receiving Food and Drug Administration approval, thus completing Medtronic's Arctic Front Advance product line-up.
It offers an increased degree of deflection and response than the previous generation of sheaths, allowing the inferior veins of the heart to be more easily reached when delivering and positioning the cryoballoon catheter in the left atrium to treat paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
Other features include a radiopaque marker band for enhanced visibility and a haemostasis valve that allows for introduction, withdrawal and exchanging of catheters and guidewires.
Reggie Groves, vice-president and general manager of Medtronic's atrial fibrillation solutions division, said: "Building upon the Arctic Front System's proven platform, the FlexCath Advance Steerable Sheath augments the overall efficiency of the procedure."
Earlier this month, the company revised its diluted earnings per share guidance for the 2013 fiscal year slightly upwards, in light of the recent renewal of the US research and development tax credit.
