Medtronic reports positive trial data for Arctic Front catheter

17th May 2010

Medtronic has supported the safety and efficacy of one of its catheter systems with results from a new clinical trial.

According to data from the Stop AF study, patients treated using the Arctic Front Cardiac CryoAblation catheter system experienced an 80 per cent decline in symptoms of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) compared to drug therapy.

In addition, all of those using the Medtronic device also reported “significant improvements” in terms of overall physical and mental quality-of-life factors.

This means that the Arctic Front system was able to meet all of its primary safety and effectiveness endpoints in the study.

Dr Jeremy Ruskin, chair of the Stop AF trial steering committee, said: “The significant reduction in AF-related symptoms observed in this trial demonstrates the potential relief that cryoablation therapy can provide to patients suffering from symptomatic paroxysmal AF.”

Earlier this week, Medtronic announced the commencement of a new trial of the RestoreSensor neurostimulator, which will provide data on the device’s effectiveness among sufferers of chronic pain.
