Merck researchers have “breakthrough” in anti-obesity drug

Merck scientists are currently in the process of developing an anti-obesity pill.

It is thought that the drug will be available within the next decade after a breakthrough in the understanding of how genetic factors make some people more likely to put on weight.

The research team has identified three new genes linked to being overweight and have revealed how they work together in networks to increase and individual’s risk of obesity.

During tests, the team tested the impact of these genes by manipulating their levels in mice and then feeding them high-fat diets.

It was found that the genes and the diets of the rodents worked together to trigger high levels of sugar and fat in the blood.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Dr Eric Schadt, senior researcher, said that although diet and exercise should be advocated as ways to help people with weight problems, this new research could lead to being able to tell people the reason behind their weight issues and select who would most benefit from drug treatment.
