Merck Serono presents grants for innovative MS research

Merck Serono has provided grants totalling one million euros (846,700 pounds) to international researchers studying multiple sclerosis (MS).

The recipients of the company's inaugural Grant for Multiple Sclerosis Innovation scheme were announced at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis, with four grants being awarded out of more than 100 proposals from around the world.

US-based scientists Dr Daniel Harrison, Dr Kevin O'Connor and Dr Joshua Bacon all received a share of the funding, alongside Dr Thomas Thum of Germany.

It is hoped that their projects will contribute to improving understanding of MS for the ultimate benefit of those living with the disease.

Dr Annalisa Jenkins, executive vice-president and global head of research and development at Merck Serono, said: "By investing in these research opportunities, we are building a bridge to a future in which more therapeutic options will improve the quality of life for those living with MS."

This comes after the firm helped Elsevier to launch a new Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre website that offers information for healthcare providers earlier this month.
