New biomedical research units announced

10th April 2008

Public health minister Dawn Primarolo has announced that 12 new biomedical research units will be used to help fight chronic illnesses, reports the Department of Health.

It was revealed that the units will join the network of National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) units already operating in twelve locations around the UK.

They will be used in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of illnesses such as asthma, arthritis, obesity and heart disease.

Ms Primarolo explained: “This will strengthen our drive to put the UK at the forefront of vital health research and contribute to the nation’s international reputation as a centre for excellence.”

Research units such as the new NIHR plans form part of a national health scheme valued at 45 million pounds to improve the nation’s health.

Meanwhile, Ms Primarolo has commented on the possibility that South Bristol could be getting a new hospital, subject to approval from a planning committee – plans which she has been openly supporting.
