New NHS data shows rise in obesity-related hospitalisations

The number of NHS hospitalisations linked to obesity has risen considerably over the last year, according to a new report.

Statistics released by NHS Digital have shown that 617,000 admissions to NHS hospitals in 2016-17 were recorded where obesity was cited as a primary or secondary diagnosis, an increase of 18 percent compared to 2015-16.

Around 66 percent of these admissions were for female patients, aligning with broader trends showing that obesity affects more women than men. The data also showed that 66 percent of men aged 19 and over met the government's aerobic guidelines in 2016, compared to only 58 percent of women.

Moreover, the prevalence of obesity was shown to be almost twice as high for women in the most deprived areas compared to the least deprived, a variation that was not replicated when analysing data for men.

The NHS Digital data also revealed that the number of items prescribed by primary care for obesity treatment decreased by ten percent in 2017, while the net ingredient cost fell from GBP 9.9 million in 2016 to GBP 6.9 million in 2017.
